Luck's Lady

The time came, the die was cast.
Luck's Lady lost, and all turned to ash.
A ruined world, a love turned to grief.
The enemy's arms were there to offer relief.
Fate couldn't be twisted, the clock no longer ticked.
Death's Hand gently carried all his master had picked.
Once the work was done, Death's Hand had nothing left to do.
But hold the shattered Lady who'd lost all she knew.
Time passed with no reckoning, for none were left to care.
Luck's Lady and Death's Hand were left alone with only silence to share.
The Lady's voice would not come, for her grief possessed no words.
While Death's Hand was a familiar with such silence, and how the mind it blurred.
So together they sat, as the ruined world spun round.
Until one day, new life they found.
It began slowly, bit by bit.
But soon the once-ruined world was consumed by it.
Luck's Lady rejoiced, for she'd thought all had been lost.
While Death's Hand merely smiled, as he awaited the cost.
For with life slowly returning to its grand scheme,
Death's Hand knew his shattered Lady would soon vanish into its alluring gleam.

Miss Malone

While the cookies were baking, I found myself with heart breaking.
It might seem silly to you, but that was the way I felt watching as my cat chose to give another the bird she'd caught.
For since she was but a kitten, Miss Malone had always captured birds for me. Big and small, always alive as she'd set them loose in whatever room I was in.
And as the bird fluttered about in panic and I'd try and catch it, I'd see the satisfied gleam in Miss Malone's eyes. For she thought me a hapless kitten, in need of hunting lessons from a master such as she.
But now, she'd given that coveted position to another: my annoying brother.
And he, being the dog person he was, did not appreciate the great honor Miss Malone had bestowed upon him.
Nor could he catch the fledgling she'd given him! It was but a puff of feather, fluttering uselessly in uncertain flaps, yet he couldn't catch it.
To hide my breaking heart, I turned away from the scene.
I lingered in the kitchen, watching the timer count down to cookie perfection. So what if Miss Malone had turned her affection to another? I'd grown tired of catching those birds anyway.
Besides, my brother would only be in town for a few more days anyway.
Let him be the one showered in feathery gifts.
A meow and gentle pressure against my leg announced Miss Malone's presence in the kitchen, and I leaned down to pet stroke her back.
Perhaps it wasn't so bad that my cat decided to share our hunting practice with another. For maybe she thought I was good enough to catch birds on my own now, and no longer needed her helping paw.
Yes, that had to be it. I'd finally graduated from Miss Malone's hunting course.
And when the timer beeped, I rewarded myself with a feather-free cookie.

To Wear a Watch

1. To keep track of how long a kid has been in timeout.
2. Because the sound of it ticking can be soothing.
3. It can help keep your wrist warm.
4. So you'll be able to know exactly how long it takes to complete a lap around the park.
5. So you make sure the class you teach doesn't go over.
6. It can help people guess your handedness.
7. You'll always have an accessory.
8. You won't have to ask someone else what time it is.
9. You won't get in trouble for pulling your phone out to check the time in class.
10. Watches are cool.

Time Loops

Time loops are lots of fun, so long as you're okay with nothing getting done.
You may learn how to sew, but will never be able show show the progress you made with each stitch.
You might make a new friend, but with each loop that passes, you'll become an ever creepier stranger to them.
That new movie you've been looking forward to will never be released.
The store will never get in more of the candy you adore.
Time loops are fun, for the first week or three.
But after thirty-seven years, you just wish for tomorrow to be set free.

Little Frog

One little frog wanted to cross the street.
But he'd been warned by his mother that streets were dangerous. Many things could go wrong: cars squishing him, a predator diving from the sky while he was out in the open, the hot sun sucking up all his moisture, and so much more!
Still, the little frog longed to cross the street.
So one day, he decided to do it.
He left his pond, hopping quietly away while his mother talked with her friends. He hopped up the hill to the street, and looked around.
The street was dark and inviting, with a haze of heat to it that never really went away. The heat was somewhat discomforting, but the little frog didn't think it was a problem.
He looked left.
Nothing.
He looked right.
Nothing there either.
He let out a ribbit of excitement, and began hopping quickly across the street.
The street was rough on his soft feet, and the heat dried him out with each moment, but the little frog didn't care.
He was going it!
He was going to see what was on the other side of the street.
Then a cry pierce the air, and the little frog froze.
He'd forgotten to look up.
Before the little frog could ribbit, a shadow covered him, and something sharp dug into his back.
Then the street was empty once again.

Gifts for a Teenager

1. Earbuds. Because they should always have a spare pair.
2. A book. Lots of teenagers enjoy reading, and a great book makes for a treasured gift.

5. Food. It is the tastiest of gifts.
6. Your time. Sometimes, all your teen really wants is to be with you, if only for a little while.
7. Music. A new jam is just what the party needed.
