Love and Cheer

A warm fire and the smell of cinnamon rolls in the oven fill the house, as does the laughter of children playing.
The adults are gathered about the table, exchanging tales of what their families have done this year.
When dinnertime arrives, they all feast on foods that were prepared with tender care. Afterwards, more games are played.
As the night deepens, farewells are expressed, along with wishes for them to gather together again soon.
For the day was full of love and cheer, as such a day should.

Hot Cookies

The cookies were cooling, though eager hands longed to snatch them up now. Who needs frosting? Hot from the oven was the only way to eat a cookie.
Sprinkles? They just get in the way.
Still, the boy kept his hands by his side, resigned to merely stare at the yummy cookies and mourn their ever decreasing temperature.
Even if he could get away with stealing a hot cookie, he really shouldn't try with these cookies. They weren't for him and his family. Mom was making them for some facy party she and Dad were going to.
So even though he wanted a cookie, he couldn't have any.
The timer beeped, and Mom pulled another pan of cookies from the oven. The groaned, and ran from the kitchen to go play into the snow.
If he couldn't have a hot cookie, then he might as well build a cold fort for the next snowball fight.

Summer in the Park

The smell of grilled chicken filled the summer air, along with the laughter of children playing in the park. Dogs barked as teenagers tossed a baseball and parents grilled next to patio tables filled with side dishes.
A couple of kids swung on the swings, each trying to get higher than the other. A group of girls giggled as the boys tried to show off for them.
Ice cream was melting, trailing down to coat a toddler's hand.
When all the food was ready, parents called their children over to eat. Grilled chicken, corn on the cob, potato salad, such much tasty food was eagerly devoured.
It was such a lovely summer day, and no one wanted it to end.
But as it is prone to do, the sun eventually began to set, and parents gathered their families to return home.
The park emptied, leaving the swings to be pushed only by a lonesome breeze.
It would be a long night, but the park would fill with the happy sounds of summer come morning, when families returned for more fun.

Do Not Push

The buttons on the counter were blue, black, and gold. They were spaced almost evenly apart, except for a gap between the black and gold buttons where another button could have been.
The sign on the wall simply said Do Not Push.
So of course, I wanted to push them.
What would they do? Which should I push first?
Would one of them explain why I was here, and where exactly here was?
All good questions, except for the fact that there was no one to answer them.
No one but the buttons.
My hand twitched toward the buttons, but I forced myself to lower it. Can't be too hasty.
I looked around the room I'd woken up in, taking in the bare walls, dusty floor, and flickering lights. Nothing of interest except for the buttons and the lack of any door.
There wasn't even a chair to sit on.
I turned away from the buttons and started pacing, debating with myself.
"Three buttons, spaced far enough apart that I can't just push them all at the same time. The gold one is shiny enough that I might actually be made of gold. The blue one is one of the rich shades that people tend to pick as a favorite color, so does that make it more tempting? And the black one, it's got a matte finish, and just seems to absorb the light without being touched by it."
I groaned and shook my head, glancing back at the sign. How could I not push such interesting buttons?
Moving back to the counter, I stared at each button in turn. My fingers were twitching with an eager anticipation, but I had to think this through.
If I could push one, I wanted it to be the best.
As I passed the large empty space between the black and gold buttons, I paused. Why wasn't there another button here?
I brushed my hand along the empty counter space, frowning a little at the thick layer of dust. Whoever ran this place needed to get a janitor.
In the center of the empty space, I felt something beneath the dust. My frown twisted into a more curious expression as I carefully brushed the dust away from whatever it covered.
Then I grinned as I saw what I'd discovered.
Another button, sunken into the countertop.
A red button.
That made it the best.
Without another thought, I pushed the red button.
And the lights went out.

Food and Family

The family gathers round, all eager to feast. So many yummy treats just waiting to be consumed, they don't know where to begin.
Should they have dessert first, and slice into the pies? Or perhaps some turkey and mashed potatoes would be a better start.
But then there are the rolls, fresh from the oven!
Oh, so many choices, how does one begin?
But begin they do, each choosing a food that they like, and digging in.
Everything is delicious.
Everyone is stuffed more than the turkey.
And happiness abounds.

Spring

Butterflies flitter through the air, vibrant wings lit by the spring sun. Flowers swayed peacefully in a gentle breeze, disturbed only by the brief appearance of a bee come to collect pollen.
At a small pond, dragonflies darted about, teasing skimming the surface. When a fish would leap out to grab one of the bugs, the dragonflies would scatter into the air, only to come back to the pond after the ripples faded.
In the trees, chicks chirp from their nests, hungrily awaiting the return of their parents. And in the cottage garden, a cat sulks off after being bombarded by wary birds shrieking a warning cry to the others of the danger to their nestlings.
The day is bright, cheerful, and new in the way only known during that time after the snow has all melted, but before the world grows hot and dry beneath the sun. That brief time known as spring, when new life sprouts forth from everywhere, and when even the rainy days seem bright.

How You Feel

Chicken noodle soup helps comfort you when sick, as does a soft blanket.
When you're sad, ice cream and a movie help chase away the blues.
Excitement is like a puppy that's ready to play; jumping about with excessive energy.
Each feeling can be connected to something or someone, and often those things can in turn bring back an echo of the feeling.
But if you're not paying attention, setimes a feeling can get lost beneath a stronger one, or mistaken for another in the bustle of life.
If you know what you feel, and you know why you're feeling it, then you are that much closer to understanding yourself.
And you are worth understanding, for you are the only person you can't get away from.
So take some time to learn how you feel.

Memory

Sometimes a memory grows dim, like a waterlogged letter washed up on the shore. Some words might still be legible, maybe a sketch or two remain, but mainly fragments remain.
Perhaps it is the sound of a loved one's voice that remains, or the smell of popcorn at the fair. You cling to those fragments, to times you thought would always be clear in your memory.
Sometimes, a memory remains perfectly clear no matter how much you might wish it to fade.
Disappointments, grief, pain. You may feel inclined to ask why such sorrows  remain in your mind.
Some folks can remember it all, as if it had happened mere moments before.
Others have trouble remembering what they did the day before.
Memory is a tricky thing, and it is oftentimes tainted by time.
Still, those experiences shape us, both the good and bad. Your memories will never be the same as someone else's, even if they are of the same moment. Because your memories are shaped in part by who you are.
Your thoughts.
Your feelings.
All the many things that make you you.
The memories you make are yours alone.
So be sure to cherish them.

Freezer Staples

1. Vegetables. Often taste just as good as fresh veggies, and can last longer.
2. Cheese. Because cheese is delicious.
3. Ice cream. It can improve a sad day.
4. Leftovers. Because if you make a bunch of something you love, and it happens to freeze really well, why not save yourself some effort for the next time you want to eat it?
5. Pizza. Because pizza is amazing.
6. Meat. Portion it before you freeze it, and then all you'll have to do is grab the amount you need for each meal.
7. Ice. Lots of folks like ice in their beverages. Who knew?
8. Ice packs. When you've twisted your ankle or hurt your shoulder, an ice pack can help numb the pain.
9. TV dinners. There always seems to be at least one hanging around.
10. Bread. Sometimes, you accidentally bake more bread then you can eat.

Two Familiars

The two cats chased each other round and round, full of energy and ire. They knocked over vials and broomsticks, scattered herbs, and even tore up the toadstools.
The witch was frustrated with her familiars, but no matter what she tried, the two cats kept chasing each other around.
She tried asking her fellow witches if they had such trouble with their familiars, but always got the same answer.
"Of course not, I only have the one!"
She just couldn't understand why the other witches were content with just one familiar. When hers weren't chasing each other, they did great work helping her collect potion potion ingredients and with casting spells.
Perhaps dealing with their crazy game of chase was simply the price she had to pay for two familiars.
Crash!
Then again, maybe there was a spell that would stop their behavior.
Crack!
Or at least make her belongings less fragile.

The Merciless Moon

The wolf ran, the rain-soaked undergrowth squishing beneath his paws. From the trees behind him, the baying of hounds and shouts of men could be heard. They wouldn't have much difficulty following the wolf's trail in this wet weather, or simply by the thorny bushes that kept snagging fur from his pelt.
Still, the wolf ran from the hunters, though a part of him relished the thought of turning around and feasting on those who thought to catch him. His blood was a siren wherever the moonlight broke through the canopy, singing of the hunt he could have, of how the thrill would be sated with sweet flesh.
The wolf tried to stay out of the moonlight, for he knew exactly how weak he was.
He ran, not from fear of the men and their hounds, but from the terror of what he might do under the moonlight.
Those men had names and faces that would surely be familiar in the glow of dawn. The wolf couldn't risk being near them before that time. He was monster they hunted, the monster that could harm their families and destroy their herds.
He was the latest moon-bathed monster of Morrison Glen, and was determined to defeat this curse.
Yet even as his determination gave strength to his paws, the wolf felt horror gnawing as he noticed the trees thinning. Not too far ahead, a curtain of moonlight framed the end of forest, and only clear farmland awaited beyond.
The wolf couldn't go out there. To enter the moonlight, to be serenaded with its siren song without reprieve, would be the death of him.
For though he was cursed to be a wolf now, he knew in that foggy sun-bleached part of his mind that he wasn't always a wolf. The part of him who would recognize his hunters was chained there, and it was only while he stayed in the shaded darkness of the night that a portion of that nearly forgotten creature could sway him away from the hunt.
That part knew he didn't want to become like the other monsters of Morrison Glen, more so than he already was.
So the wolf stopped in the darkness just before that curtain of moonlight, ears twitching at the sound of his pursuers drawing ever closer.
He could not go forward without losing what little sanity he still held, but there was no way to go back without encountering the hunters.
Lifting his head, the wolf gave a mournful howl to the merciless moon, knowing that in the coming moments, either he or his hunters would die.
And he didn't know which would hurt him more.

More

When someone bakes you a cookies, you feel happy.
When someone bakes you a dozen cookies every day for an entire month, you start to get the feeling that they just like baking cookies. That, and a queasy feeling at the smell of snickerdoodles.
Sometimes, less is more, in so many ways. More special, more exciting, more thoughtful.
More may seem better, and sometimes it is. The trick is learning when something is quantity improves quality.
More cookies are great when you have a big group, for then everyone can have some.
More cookies when you're sitting alone at home can lead to a stomachache.
More for the sake of more is excessive, and can lead to selfish tendencies. More for the sake of helping those who have less a way to care for others.
Next time you seek for more of something, ask yourself why exactly you want more.
Then, ask if your reasons are sound, or if there are better things you can seek for.

Candy Hiding Places

1. Above the washing machine. Who'd think to look for candy while washing laundry?
2. In the closet. Right next to the presents.
3. In the bread box. Because chocolate and rye go so well together.
4. The vegetable drawer. Brussel sprouts are excellent at protecting candy from children.
5. Under the bed. You know, as an easily accessible midnight snack.
6. Behind the microwave.
7. In the garage. That way you can always get a treat before you go.
8. Inside a desk. Because the munchies don't wait for work to end.
9. On top of the bookshelf. Because a good book deserves a good treat.
10. In your stomach. Then no one can steal your candy.

Blocks and Bricks

When given a block, make it a brick.
Build something, brick by brick.
For each brick may once have been a block.
But bricks can make houses, if you don't let them remain as a block.
For a block can seem daunting, a huge stone you can't budge.
But turn it to bricks, and they're more easily nudged.
So don't let it defeat you, whatever your block may be.
You can turn it into bricks, and then you're home free.

Burning

Burning buns is no fun.
It makes for a sad burger.
Burning marshmallows can be fun.
If you like your s'mores a bit darker.
Burning dinner calls for takeout.
Burning a log is cheerful on a wintry day.
Just be aware of what you're burning, and you won't accidentally burn a bridge today.

Plant a Seed

If you plant a seed, it just might grow.
And if you care well for it, your efforts will show.
Your plant will grow to be sturdy and strong.
Your garden might even flourish all year long.
But before you can claim your prize at the fair,
You must start with a seed, and continue on from there.

Happiness...

One's happiness needn't be determined by the size of their house, the quality of their food, or their ability to socialize.
For happiness is more than the things you own, more than your abilities, and more than the people you know.
Happiness, when built upon an understanding of your own worth, will last far longer than a house.
Happiness that comes from accepting yourself, faults and all, will remain even after you can no longer cook.
Happiness that is centered in understanding exactly who you are, will last even when friendships fade.
For happiness is more than those things which surround your life. It is more than making a choice to be happy.
Happiness can come even when everything around you is going wrong. It can be found in a flower growing in the sidewalk, or in the laugh of a baby.
Happiness is more than a feeling. It is in things big and small, along with so many things in between.
Happiness can come unexpectedly. It can flee in times when you'd expect it to stay.
A lack of happiness now needn't mean you'll never be happy again, for times of sorrow come to all.
If you find yourself in the gloom of sorrow, don't give in. It may take time, sometimes help from others too, but happiness will return.
And it'll be up to you to welcome it back.

As Only a Cat Can

Softly fall the tired eyes, while the body settles to rest.
Tail curled around her frame, the cat settles upon the pillow.
Sleep comes swiftly for one of few cares, and every dream is filled with sweetness.
Oh, to be a cat!
To be at peace through the long night, sure of what the morn will bring.
For now, the cat will rest.
Tomorrow, she will face the day as only a cat can: full of feline pride.

Forgetful Mind

The mind may forget things, like the sound of voice, or the laugh of a lover.
The mind may forget the smell of the sea, of the touch of a butterfly's wings.
The mind may forget what it learned in its youth, it might not remember what was the truth.
The mind may forget so many things, but the mind might be brought to recall all again.
It may recall a first kiss, or the new fallen snow. It might remember the eager tug of a child's hand, when Santa comes to town.
It may recall a treasured quote, or the sound of a mother's sigh.
And if it needs a little prompting, well, it has many loved ones by its side.
So though the mind may forget, it needn't despair. For a forgetful mind surrounded by love is far lighter to bear.

Parakeet Treat

There once was a parakeet, all by himself.
Although he could fly, he couldn't push the treats off the shelf.
And so one day the parakeet flew out of his house, to find someone strong enough to help.
The first creature he met was a little wolf whelp.
The little wolf greeted the parakeet with a grin, "We were about to have lunch, do you want to come in?"
The parakeet agreed, for his stomach did ache.
So the wolf whelp led him into the den, where his mother did wait.
"My, what a sweet little bird!" The mother wolf growled in delight.
And before the parakeet could blink, he went out like a light.
Although he was small, the wolves enjoyed the rare treat.
For parakeets rarely venture to places where a wolf they could happen to meet.

Pets...

When the dog wants some love, just give his belly a rub.
When the cat wants some cuddles, to not give in brings troubles.
When the dog wants to play with his toy, throwing it brings great joy.
When the cat chases a mouse, you simply hope to get it out of the house.
When the dog starts to beg, a tasty treat may be hidden down by you leg.
When the cat demands a treat, you'd better be fast on your feet.
Whatever the animal, dog, cat, or fish,
Pets have a way of fulfilling our every wish.

The Old Computer

The old computer monitor sat dusty in the corner. Though still plugged in, it had been forgotten by those in the house. For who want to wait for a old piece of tech to finish loading the log-in screen when they could simply whip out their phone?
And so the old computer monitor sat in disuse, with only its companion tower for company.
They didn't even have a mouse anymore, for the cat had stolen the wireless device months ago (it probably hadn't been the wisest of design choices to make the wireless mouse look like a real mouse).
Still, the old monitor held out hope that one day, one of the family would find a use for them again.
At this point, even getting turned on so old family photos could be transferred over to one of the sleek new laptops would be acceptable.
But until that moment came, the old computer monitor would sit and wait, collecting dust.

Places to Find the Cat

1. In a box. Doesn't matter what the box was for, it now belongs to the cat.
2. On the counter. Because nowhere is off limits to the feline of the house.
3. In the closet. If you didn't want to lock the cat in there, then you really shouldn't have opened it in the first place.
4. Tangled in yarn. Doesn't matter how often you take it away or hide it, the cat will find and unball all the yarn.
5. In your seat. What do you mean your seat, don't you see all the cat hair? That means it belongs to the cat, obviously.
6. Behind the couch. Because that is a good place for a catnap.
7. Under the bed. Ha ha, you can't reach the kitty, so no vet visit today!
8. On top of the door. Someone had to climb up to get the spider on the ceiling, after all.
9. In the window. And if you try closing it, then the cat will be outside the window.
10. In the sink. Right when you want to wash your hands, too.

Stars

The thing about love is that it is not a single pie. Though slices are taken by those thought of fondly, it needn't ever be finished.
For love is like stars, numerous, far-reaching things. Some, like the sun, fill each day with warmth. Others seem more distant, oftentimes appearing cold. But they still light up the darkness with their presence, and guide us through the ocean of life.
Love is not an eight-slice pie, to be hoarded until the right people come into your life.
For love is better spent filling the sky with constellations to mark each person who had touched your heart.
So fill your life with stars, and remember that though some may be distant, the sun too is a star.

Yellow Daisy

A little yellow daisy grew beside the street.
One day, a little boy plucked it from the ground and raced toward his new neighbor's house.
In the neighbor's house lived a little girl with long dark hair. When the little boy knocked on the door, the little girl answered.
Before she could even mutter a hello, the little boy shoved the yellow daisy into her hands and ran away.
The little girl looked at the yellow daisy, and offered it a smile.
The yellow daisy found itself pressed inside a book, where it dried into a fragile thing.
Many years later, the not-so-little girl opened the book, and tenderly lifted out the daisy.
"On the day we met, your father knocked on my door and gave me this flower," she said to two small children, "he didn't even say hello! And it was the first of many flowers he gave me, and they were always given right before he would run away"
The not-so-little girl smiled as her children laughed, and tenderly returned the yellow daisy to its book.

For Having a Cat

1. They will let you know where all the spiders and flies are hiding.
2. You won't be asleep anymore once you hear them hacking up a hairball.
3. You'll never be cold during the winter.
4. They can ease your stress simply by curling up on your lap.
5. They make birdwatching a fun spectator sport.
6. A purring kitty on your head makes for a peaceful night's rest.
7. You'll always know when it is dinnertime.
8. They are soft and self-cleaning.
9. With enough cat hair, no one will notice you spilled ketchup on your shirt.
10. They are adorable.

Sleepy Clouds

Sleepy clouds up in the sky,
Hide the sun so you can lie,
Amidst the blankets on your bed,
Where with cozy thoughts your dreams are led,
On wild adventures through lands afar,
Such excitement always makes you the star.

Breakfast

Pancakes topped with raspberry jelly,
Are sure to make for some happy bellies.
Scrambled eggs loaded with cheese,
Will certainly have them asking for seconds, please.
Bacon and sausage are simply the best,
When looking for a meat to put your hunger to rest.
All are yummy foods, and you know what they say,
That breakfast is the most important meal of the day.

Running...

Running, running, in the night.
Laughing, laughing, with delight.
Wondering, wondering, how far you'll go.
Smiling, smiling, at the sun's warm glow.
Seeking, seeking, for something of worth.
Finding, finding, so much joy on Earth.
