Anticipation

Anticipation leaves you jittery. When will it happen? How will it go? Will everyone arrive safely?

Anticipation brings forth a restless night. For how can you sleep with what it about to occur?

Anticipation steals the breathe from your lungs. Will it be liked? Did you do enough? What if nothing turns out as it should?

Anticipation can cause a lot of things to happen, if you let it. So don't dwell on the bad things in life, for life is not about hitting your lowest of lows.

Keep climbing that cliff, until your finally able to stand at the top. You can do it.

So don't worry about where the anticipation is coming from. You've got this in hand.

A Blank Page

A blank page stares mockingly back at me.

No ideas come. No stories, art, nor craft leaves the pen to stain the page with inspired ink.

What hope have I of marring the unblemished canvas before me? What note shall be scrawled upon the paper?

Shall I ever see lines of liquid pigment drying upon the sheet? Or am I doomed to an endless field of nothing for evermore?

What cases the heart to clench so? The agony of a blank page, or the despair of wasying such resources on that which is of little value?

Thoughts pry at my mind, yet flee upon approach of that dreaded page.

One day, they shall meet, and I shall revel in the joys of a mind less cluttered, and a page finally filled.

Letters

She used to get letters, when she was young.

Beautiful letters, flowing with poetic prose that made her heart flutter.

Dirty letters, smudged with ink and sweat, and cherished all the more for the moment its writer was able to take in order to send her his thoughts.

Crisp letters on monogrammed paper, informing her of a child's acceptance into a prestigious academy.

Letters from friends, family, and those fond strangers with whom she exchanged recipes and book recommendations.

But no one sent letters anymore.

She couldn't remember the last time she'd received a letter.

It made her long for those wonderful days long gone, so she went to the closet and pulled out a box.

The box of all her letters, her treasured collection.

She sat on the couch, and opened the box.

It didn't matter which one she picked, for they were all wonderful.

So she sat there, going through letters yellowed by time, and lost herself in the memories.

Skitter-scatter

The skitter-scatter of feet woke him.

It was still dark out, somewhere in that time between midnight and morning, when most everything was at rest. Those few that aren't where the creatures that haunted your dreams, that always lingered at the corner of your eye, and left you unable to settle once you were aware of them.

He tried not to be aware.

There came another skitter-scatter, and he closed his eyes. If he ignored it, it would go away. Such was the way of these things. They only had power if you fed them, and he wasn't the kind to give handouts.

Tomorrow would come soon enough, and he'd be back to work, whiling away the hours until he could clock out and go meet his friend for their trip to the lake that weekend. It would be nice, even though they never seemed to catch anything.

They could skip stones, like when they were kids. When was the last time they'd done that?

He rolled over to find a better position, for his mattress had this one lump that always seemed to find just the wrong spot and keep him awake. The neighbor's light was on, and he could see flickering shadows as multiple figures moved about.

He rolled to his other side and closed his eyes, recalling that his neighbor lived alone. That's why they would split a bulk order between the two of them, because it was more cost effective to buy such common pantry items in bulk and split it than to buy the amount they wanted individually.

Sleep dragged at his eyes, and his last thought was that he'd need to find someone else to split bulk order costs with now.
