The Best Pie
There once was a dog who wanted a pie. Not just any pie, but the very best pie the Old Farmer's Wife could bake.
For this pie had all the best things: cheese, cubes of roast, potatoes bursting with gravy, and a flaky crust that practically melted on your tongue.
It wasn't just any pie. It was the best.
And the Old Farmer's Wife only made it once a year for the Old Farmer's birthday.
So the dog made a plan. For it to succeed, he needed the help of the mice in the floorboards, the mean barn cat, and the rooster.
And the dog went to each creature, and told the his plan, and promised the a part of the pie.
The mice wanted the cheese.
The mean barn cat insisted on having the roast.
The rooster claimed the crust.
When the day came, the Old Farmer's Wife set the pie on the windowsill to cool, turned, and screamed for the Farmer. The Farmer rushed in, then ran back out to the barn. For there were a half-dozen mice scurrying about the kitchen!
In the barn, the Farmer found the mean barn cat and brought her into the kitchen.
When the cat saw the mice, she got right to the chase.
One by one, she caught the mice, and ate them.
While the Farmer and his Wife were watching the cat, the rooster flew up to the windowsill, and pecked at the pie until it fell to the geound outside.
But before the rooster could hop diwn to enjoy the pie, the Farmer caught it by its neck. "Do you know how long it took my wife to make that? And now you've ruined it!" The Farmer said, before taking the rooster outside to wring its neck.
With all the mice caught, the mean barn cat settled down to sleep off her full stomach, while the Farmer and his wife prepared for a fresh chicken dinner.
The dog wandered over to the ruined pie on the ground, and got to eating. His plan had work perfectly, even though he only shared a part with each of the other animals.
